A multiplicity of services: exhibits, private sales and auction at Sotheby’s
ANNA McKNIGHT, SPECIALIST IN CONTEMPORARY ART AT SOTHEBY’S AND VITALLY INVOLVED IN SOTHEBY’S GALLERY S/2 HAS INFORMED US OF THE TERRIFIC ACTIVITIES OF S/2 IN ITS FIRST YEAR AND THE FUTURE EXHIBITIONS WE CAN ANTICIPATE. EACH SELLING EXHIBIT EITHER PROFILES AN ARTIST’S WORK OR OFFERS A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE FROM AN INVITED CURATOR. THE GALLERY SERVES AS WELL AS A PLATFORM FOR THE PRIVATE SALES SECTOR AT SOTHEBY’S, A VERY IMPORTANT ASPECT OF AUCTION BUSINESS.
HERE WE EXPLORE, THANKS TO ANNA’S CONTRIBUTION, THE BUSINESS DYNAMICS OF BOTH THE GALLERY AND PRIVATE SALES AND LOOK, A BIT, INTO THE FUTURE OF THESE ASPECTS.
ANNA, THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND EXPERTISE. ANOTHER ASPECT OF THE AUCTION VENUE IS, OF COURSE, PRIVATE SALES, AS STRONG A DYNAMIC IN THE AUCTION MARKET AS THE AUCTIONS THEMSELVES. WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN S2 AND THE PRIVATE SALES SECTOR AT SOTHEBY’S.
As I mentioned before, we had intended to create S/2 as a space to show private selling works. We conduct private sales throughout the year which benefits both are buying and selling clients who are seeking an alternative to auction. Sometimes it is nice to not have to wait until November or May to buy or sell something, for example. We accept consignments throughout the year!
DO YOU PLAN TO FOCUS ONLY ON CONTEMPORARY ART AND ARTISTS OR WILL EXHIBITIONS FOR S2 INCLUDE WORKS OF OTHER PERIODS AND CATEGORIES?
At the moment we are focusing on contemporary works. However, I am sure there will be instances where we will need the perfect Rodin or Monet to complete a show, or when we will dedicate an exhibition to another style, period or genre.
WHAT DO YOU FIND DIFFERENT THAN THE WORK YOU DO IN THE DEPARTMENT ITSELF? THE INSTALLATIONS YOU HAVE PUT TOGETHER ARE IMPECCABLE. IS THAT AN ASPECT OF THE GALLERY THAT YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOY?
I love it all! It is still fun to be involved in the auction process, because that is after all what Sotheby’s lives and breathes. However, it has been a special thrill and privilege to work with some of our guest curators like Debra Burchett-Lere and Vito Schnabel, and everyone from Kayne Griffin Corcoran.
WHAT ARE THE GOALS THAT SOTHEBY’S WISHES TO REALIZE WITH S2?
Private sales are an increasingly important part of Sotheby’s business, and with S|2 we will continue to provide our clients with new and exciting collecting opportunities that they may be surprised to see from us.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. I HOPE EVERYONE WILL VISIT THIS IMPECCABLE GALLERY SPACE WHEN YOU’RE IN NY AND HAVE THE PLEASURE OF MEETING ANNA. SOTHEBY’S S/2, 1334 YORK AVENUE, NEW YORK, IS LOCATED BETWEEN 71 and 72nd STREET, AND YORK AVENUE. http://www.sothebys.com/en/departments/contemporary-art/overview.html
IN OUR NEXT INTERVIEW, I HAVE THE PLEASURE OF SPEAKING WITH A METICULOUS DEALER AND CONNOISSEUR OF SCULPTURE. ESTABLISHED IN 1980, JOEL ROSENKRANZ, AND HIS ERUDITE WIFE AND SCHOLAR, JANIS CONNER, OPENED A GALLERY LOCATED ON THE UPPER EAST SIDE. THE GALLERY EMPHASIS IS ON 19th AND 20th CENTURY AMERICAN SCULPTURE, INCLUDING NEOCLASSICAL, BEAUX ARTS, AND MODERIST WORKS. THE GALLERY IS HOUSED IN A WONDERFUL TOWNHOUSE AND INCLUDES A GARDEN THAT INVITES THE INSTALLATION OF SCULPTURE. I LOOK FORWARD TO VISITING WITH JOEL.
I WELCOME ANY AND ALL COMMENTS, QUESTIONS AND SUGGESTIONS. JOEL WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN ESTABLISHING OUR APPRECIATION OF SCULPTURE OF THESE PERIODS AND HAPPY TO SHARE HIS KNOWLEDGE WITH US.
