A celebration of American art

by leslierankowfinearts

IT IS ALWAYS A PLEASURE TO ENJOY THE PROFESSIONAL FRIENDSHIPS THAT EVOLVE WHEN WORKING ON A PICTURE WITH A COLLEAGUE. ONE OF THE WOMAN FOR WHOM I HAVE GREAT ADMIRATION AND RESPECT IS JENNIFER KRIEGER,OF HAWTHORNE FINE ARTS (74 East 79th Street, New York, New York). http://www.hawthornefineart.com/

I FIRST MET JENNIFER WHEN SHE WAS WORKING AT A GALLERY SPECIALIZING IN AMERICAN ART AND IT IS VERY INSPIRING TO SEE HER OPEN HER OWN SPACE, NOW TWO, ONE IN NEW YORK CITY ON EAST 79th STREET AND THE NEW GALLERY LOCATED  ON THE HUDSON IN THE AREA BELOVED  BY JENNIFER AND  THE 19th CENTURY AMERICAN ARTISTS SHE REPRESENTS. JENNIFER’S SINCERE PASSION FOR THE PERIOD, HER SCHOLARSHIP AND ACADEMIC CONTRIBUTIONS ARE A REAL CONTRIBUTION NOT ONLY TO THE REPUTATION OF THE GALLERY BUT ALSO TO THE LITERATURE OF THE PERIOD.

JENNIFER, THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO SPEAK WITH US. PLEASE TELL US YOUR HISTORY AS AN ART HISTORIAN AND AS A DEALER IN AMERICAN ART.

WHEN DID YOU ESTABLISH YOUR OWN GALLERY AND WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO DO SO?

I founded Hawthorne Fine Art in 2005. I felt that I was ready to take a new step and become of the proprietor of my own dream. I was excited at the opportunity to shape the gallery’s inventory and creatively pursue new acquisitions as well as to create a roster of exhibitions that would enhance the field of American Art.

WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA THAT YOU CONSIDER SIGNIFICANT IN TAKING A WORK ON CONSIGNMENT OR PURCHASING THE WORK OUTRIGHT?

Quality and value are the two most important considerations. The work must be both art-historically significant and very beautiful. With each artist I seek to acquire both the time period and/or subject matter in which he or she flourished the most. I also only pursue works that are in excellent condition, which have an identifiable provenance and are priced correctly.

I KNOW YOU LOVE THE HUDSON RIVER REGION AND WERE VERY GENEROUS IN ARRANGING A WONDERFUL TOUR OF OLANA AND THE THOMAS COLE HOUSE FOR ME AND A CLIENT. OUR DAY WAS MEMORABLE NOT ONLY IN SEEING THESE FAMOUS SITES OF MASTER 19th CENTURY ARTISTS,  FREDERIC CHURCH AND THOMAS COLE, BUT ALSO THE VISTAS AND COUNTRYSIDE THAT INSPIRED THEM AND SO MANY OTHERS. YOU NOW HAVE A SECOND GALLERY EXHIBITION SPACE IN IRVINGTON, NEW YORK.

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO OPEN THERE AS WELL?

I have always been inspired by the idea of views – viewsheds and vantage points in paintings, in architecture and in landscape architecture. I thought an ideal outlook for the gallery would be a view onto the Hudson River, the very territory our paintings represent.

IN OUR NEXT BLOG, JENNIFER KRIEGER WILL DESCRIBE VARIOUS ASPECTS OF THE GALLERY AND ITS REFLECTION OF HER ADMIRATION AND DEVOTION TO THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN PAINTING AND LITERATURE.  ONE OF THE GREAT GEMS THAT CLIENTS AND I APPRECIATE IS THE WONDERFUL CATALOGUE HAWTHORNE FINE ART PUBLISHES ENTITLED SUMMER READING: AMERICAN PAINTING AND PROSE. IT IS THE PERFECT TANGIBLE METAPHOR FOR JENNIFER’S GENUINE APPRECIATION AND ESTEEM FOR THE ART AND LITERATURE OF THIS PERIOD.
