A new collector responding to a roster of provocative contemporary artists

Teresita Fernandez Cameo NightBEGINNING TO COLLECT AND BUILD AN ART COLLECTION CAN BE A CHALLENGING EXPERIENCE. IT IS WONDERFUL WHEN  PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD AN INTEREST IN ART GROWING UP TAKE THEIR FIRST LEAP OF FAITH AND MAKE A PURCHASE. IT IS ALL THE MORE REWARDING FOR ME TO WORK WITH CLIENTS WHO SHARE MY INTEREST IN ART AND THE ART MARKET AND ARE ENTHUSIASTIC AND BRAVE EXPLORERS OF THIS EXTRAORDINARILY RICH TERRAIN.

IDENTIFYING GENERAL STYLES AND PERIODS TO WHICH A NEW COLLECTOR RESPONDS AS WELL AS  SPECIFIC ARTISTS AND MEDIUMS IS A FAVORITE PART OF MY JOB. IT IS PARTICULARLY INVIGORATING WHEN CLIENTS  HAVE A SENSE OF ADVENTURE AND CONFIDENCE.  DIANE AND HER HUSBAND, BILL,  WHO STARTED TO WORK WITH ME JUST A SHORT TIME  AGO, HAVE KINDLY SHARED THEIR EXPERIENCE IN TERMS OF THEIR FIRST PURCHASES.  TODAY, SHE WILL ENLIGHTEN US ON THE PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE  OF COLLECTING– THE CONCERNS, HESITATIONS, AND THOUGHTS THAT ARE AS  INTEGRAL TO THE PROCESS AS THE RESEARCH AND EXPLORATION OF THE ART AND ARTISTS THEMSELVES.

DIANE, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING TIME TO ANSWER MY QUESTIONS AND SHARE YOUR IMPRESSIONS AND VIEWS ON COLLECTING.

TO CONTINUE, DID YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND GROW UP IN FAMILIES THAT WERE INTERESTED IN ART, VISIT MUSEUMS AS A CHILD OR DID THIS INTEREST EMERGE AS ADULTS?  I KNOW YOU HAVE INSTILLED A LOVE OF MUSIC AND THEATER IN YOUR CHILDREN AND I ASSUME THESE INTERESTS WERE PASSED ON TO YOU FROM YOUR PARENTS.

I think we both had exposure to art.  My parents took me to museums in New York City.  My grandfather painted watercolor landscapes, I had an uncle who loves printmaking, creating modernist woodcuts, inspired as was Picasso by African images and subjects. As kids we toured churches in Europe, and while I probably didn’t appreciate it at the time, it formed the basis for my interest in art.

My husband’s parents took him on tours of Europe where he saw many of key works of art in some of the large European cities- the Mona Lisa in Paris and the Statue of David in Rome.  He went to high school in New York and took an art history course which he remembers in some detail.  We are friends with a couple who are also art collectors and I know that my husband always had an interest in starting to collect.

IN ANTICIPATION OF MOVING  YOUR CURRENT HOUSE WHILE IT WAS BEING BUILT, YOU BEGAN WAREHOUSING AND COLLECTING A DYNAMIC GROUP OF BOTH ESTABLISHED AND MORE CUTTING-EDGE ARTISTS; ARTISTS WITH MUSEUM AND EXHIBITION HISTORY AND STRONG GALLERY REPRESENTATION.  THE COLLECTION TO DATE INCLUDES   WORKS BY ARTISTS WITH A DIVERSITY OF CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS AND AESTHETIC SENSIBILITIES- BRITISH, GERMAN, SPANISH, POLISH, AND IRANIAN, TO NAME A FEW.

BOTH YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND MADE A BIG LEAP, RIGHT FROM THE START, AND GRAVITATE TO SOPHISTICATED ARTISTS THAT OTHERS MIGHT NEED TIME TO APPRECIATE AND ACQUIRE. I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW HOW THAT CAME ABOUT.

I am not sure!  All I know is that we collect what we like and our tastes are formed by art we have loved and admired. And it gives us an avenue to be expressive. We are drawn to color and boldness.

I HAVE SOME GOALS FOR THE COLLECTION- TO EXPAND THE COLLECTION TO INCLUDE BOTH INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SCULPTURE SINCE YOU HAVE SUCH A GREAT PROPERTY.  DO YOU AND BILL HAVE PREDETERMINED GOALS NOW IN TERMS OF THE ARTISTS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD TO THE COLLECTION? DO YOU HAVE SPECIFIC MEDIUMS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO EXPLORE?

I think that there also we are open to the idea—we don’t have predetermined  notions about who we want to collect.  We rely on you to guide us as to creating a collection of artists who relate to one another.  Once presented with new artists, we react to the artists’work.  I know that we both have themes that speak to us—forms ( I am circular, he more angular) but we know when we love something, and where we both feel very strongly about a piece. I think that we both love and are interested in sculpture and when the time, and situation present themselves to suit us we will take that plunge.

I ALSO THINK IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO CREATE A CHRONOLOGICAL ARCH AND PLATFORM OF SMALLER, STELLAR WORKS BY MODERN MASTERS THAT HAVE INFLUENCED THE ARTISTS IN THE COLLECTION. AN OBVIOUS EXAMPLE IS ANDY WARHOL, WHO HAS INFLUENCED SO MANY ARTISTS IN A VARIETY OF WAYS, EITHER TECHNICAL IN TERMS OF REPETITION OF IMAGE OR PHILOSOPHICALLY IN TERMS OF SOCIETAL ATTITUDES AND FOIBLES, TO NAME A FEW.

WE HAVE STARTED TO LOOK AT WARHOL AND LICHTENSTEIN AS ANOTHER WAY TO ENRICH THE COLLECTION AND I LOOK FORWARD TO OUR EXPLORATION OF THIS AREA AS WELL.  THIS IS JUST ONE OF THE TOPICS DIANE WILL KINDLY EXAMINE IN OUR NEXT BLOG.  STAY TUNED…..AND PLEASE COMMENT AND ASK QUESTIONS. WE’D LOVE TO RESPOND AND WOULD APPRECIATE  THE INPUT.

MANY THANKS…
