ALONG WITH THE EMERGENCE OF AN EVER-INCREASING NUMBER OF ART FAIRS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, COLLECTORS, DEALERS AND ARTISTS ARE ALL BECOMING INCREASINGLY DEMANDING IN THEIR EXPECTATIONS OF WHAT THEY HOPE TO SEE WHEN THEY ARE VISITING OTHER COUNTRIES AND CITIES.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE PRIVATE TOURS AND PRIVATE VIEWS THAT YOU HAVE ORGANIZED FOR THE TURON CLIENT?
We recently created a tour with Art Stage Singapore for a special collector group viewing private collections throughout Indonesia. The group was small and very discrete.
ARE THERE A GREAT MANY PRIVATE COLLECTIONS IN INDONESIA?
There are a handful of collections – all owned by local Entrepreneurs and Industrialists.
WHEN WERE THEY FORMED – RECENTLY OR SOME TIME AGO?
They are relatively new – within the last decade or so.
ARE THEY PREDOMINANTLY NATIONALIST IN CONTENT (INDONESIAN ARTIFACTS AND CONTEMPORARY ART) OR INTERNATIONAL (COLLECTIONS OF MAJOR MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY MASTERS)?
The content tends to be local to the region – not quite Nationalistic per se – but focusing on the growing popularity of artists in Indonesia, Malaysia, China, etc.
IN EUROPE, MAASTRICHT IS ONE OF THE MOST HIGHLY REGARDED FAIRS IN THE WORLD, AN INCOMPARABLE EXPOSITION OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY ANTIQUES, ART RANGING FROM OLD MASTER TO CONTEMPORARY, AND DESIGN. THERE HAS, IN RECENT YEARS, BEEN A MUCH STRONGER SHOWING BY MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY GALLERIES IN THIS FAVORED VENUE. HOW DO YOU ACCOUNT FOR ITS QUALITY AND POPULARITY?
TEFAF is now in its 19th year. They started on a Classic footing but are now expanding to incorporate the tastes and trends of the younger collectors entering the art ‘arena’. Because of the physical size of Maastricht I think TEFAF is one of those destinations which incorporates some very special collections which are quite private. It is very difficult to get accommodations in this city and programs have to be organized at least 1 year in advance.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE PRIVATE COLLECTIONS IN MAASTRICHT?
DO THEY CREATE A HISTORICAL ARCH FROM OLD MASTER TO CONTEMPORARY OR ARE THEY, FOR THE MOST PART, MORE TRADITIONAL IN NATURE? HOW DO YOU ACCOUNT FOR BELGIUM BEING SUCH A STRONGHOLD OF GREAT ANTIQUES AND ART?
Masstricht was a major city of commerce during the Middle Ages. The area is literally covered with castles filled with very special period antiques. As time went on the collections added the works of the old masters. Many of these private collections are ‘treasure troves., that is why they are very private. As these collections and their owners have progressed during the ages so have their collections and they certainly the finer aspects of the Contemporary.
THERE ARE CERTAINLY GREAT COLLECTIONS IN ACCESSIBLE VENUES AS WELL. MIAMI AND DALLAS ARE TWO OF MY FAVORITE CITIES AS “ART DESTINATIONS”.
