LEHMANN MAUPIN IS AN EXCELLENT CONTEMPORARY GALLERY THAT REPRESENTS A STRONG AND VARIED INTERNATIONAL ROSTER OF ARTISTS.   NEARLY TWENTY YEARS AGO,RACHELLEHMANN, A PASSIONATE ART COLLECTOR AND GALLERY VISIONARY, JOINED RANKS WITHDAVIDMAUPIN, AN ASTUTE AND SAVVY DEALER, TO FORMLEHMANNMAUPIN GALLERY. ORIGINALLY LOCATED IN SOHO, THE GALLERY HAS SUCCEEDED IN SUPPORTING AN EXCEPTIONAL GROUP OF ARTISTS  WHO EMBRACE NEW AND OFTEN CHALLENGING FORMS OF EXPRESSION IN A WIDE RANGE OF MEDIUMS, EACH UNIQUE IN AESTHETIC SENSIBILITY, REFLECTING A WIDE DIVERSITY OF BOTH GEOGRAPHICAL AND CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS. LEHMANN MAUPIN INITIATED THE FIRST SOLO NEW YORK EXHIBITIONS OF SUCH ARTISTS AS TRACEY EMIN, SHIRAZEH HOUSHIARY AND DO HO SUH, TO NAME A FEW.  http://www.lehmannmaupin.com

TWELVE YEARS AGO, LEHMANN  MAUPIN JOINED THE GALLERY EXODUS FROM SOHO TO RELOCATE IN CHELSEA.  WORKING IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE BRILLIANT REM KOOLHAAS,  THE GALLERY  NOW RESIDES IN THREE ARCHITECTURALLY COMPELLING SPACES, TWO IN NEW YORK: CHELSEA AND THE LOWER EAST SIDE, AND THE MOST RECENT IN HONG KONG.  WHATEVER THE VENUE, THE GALLERY IS DEDICATED TO THE REPRESENTATION OF ARTISTS OF EXCELLENT QUALITY AND THEIR COMMITMENT TO THE ARTISTS’ PROFESSIONAL AND CREATIVE EXPANSION. I AM PARTICULARLY DELIGHTED TO INTRODUCE CARLA CAMACHO, A PARTNER AT LEHMANN MAUPIN, TO THE LRFA BLOG.  IT IS ALWAYS A PLEASURE TO WORK WITH HER.  HER ENTHUSIASM AND KNOWLEDGE OF THE ARTISTS SHE REPRESENTS MAKES MY JOB EASY, AND IT HAS BEEN A GREAT PLEASURE TO GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HER PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AND HER ONGOING COMMITMENT TO THE WORLD OF CONTEMPORARY ART.

CARLA, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE LRFA BLOG. I KNOW THAT THE DEMANDS OF WORK AND FAMILY, BUSINESS TRAVEL, FAIRS  AND GALLERY EXHIBITIONS, MAKE THIS A VERY GENEROUS UNDERTAKING ON YOUR PART.

HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME AN ART DEALER? WHAT  IS YOUR OWN PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AND STUDY IN THE FIELD?

While an undergraduate student at Marymount, I took a required visual arts class and it really blew my mind. I had no previous exposure to contemporary art and I remember visiting the galleries in SoHo thinking that I absolutely wanted to be a part of this exciting world. Two exhibitions in particular really opened my eyes to what art was: Tony Oursler at Metro Pictures and Annette Messager at MoMA.

THOSE EXHIBITS WERE WONDERFUL. I REMEMBER HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE MESSAGER SHOW BOTH IN NEW YORK AND CHICAGO. IT WAS REALLY INTERESTING FOR ME TO IDENTIFY HOW INSTALLATIONS ARE ADAPTED TO RESPOND TO THE IDIOSYNCRASY OF A DIFFERENT VENUE.  WHAT DID YOU DO NEXT AND HOW DID YOU PROCEED FROM THERE?

I went on to intern at Leo Castelli Graphics and decided to get my Master’s at Pratt. While getting my degree, I worked at both Cheim and Read and Paul Morris Gallery and started to do sales. I loved everything about working in a gallery – the intensity of the day to day is still a thrill but, really, it’s the relationships that I’ve formed over the years with both artists and clients that gives me the most satisfaction. My experience is quite well-rounded because I’ve done everything from bottom to top in the gallery structure.

WHEN DID YOU JOIN LEHMANN MAUPIN? IT IS SUCH A GREAT GALLERY AND EVERYONE IS SO KNOWLEDGEABLE AND COMMITTED TO THE GALLERY AND TO THE ARTISTS.

Since I started at the gallery seven years ago, we have grown quite a bit. In 2007, we added a gallery on the Lower East Side, taking over an old glass factory and providing a different type of space for our artists than the Rem Koolhaas-designed Chelsea Gallery. As you just mentioned, we added a gallery in Hong Kong. It’s been very exciting to participate in this growth and development professionally. David and Rachel really foster entrepreneurial ideas and offer a supportive environment to the staff.

IN OUR NEXT BLOG, CARLA WILL TRACE THE FASCINATING HISTORY OF THE GALLERY, ITS EVOLUTION FROM A SINGLE SPACE IN SOHO TO ITS INTERNATIONAL POSITION IN THE ART WORLD NOW. CARLA HAS GREAT WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF THE HIERARCHY OF THE GALLERY SYSTEM AND THE  EXPERIENCE  OF WORKING IN SEVERAL ART ENVIRONMENTS. HER KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONTEMPORARY MARKET AND THE GALLERY ARTISTS IS MULTI-FACETED. DO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE.

UNTIL NEXT TIME, THANKS FOR READING!
