ART BASEL HONG KONG OPENS ON MAY 15TH AT THE HONG KONG CONVENTION AND EXHIBITION CENTRE, SITED ON HONG KONG’S STUNNING VICTORIA HARBOUR AND FRAMED BY ITS SPECTACULAR SKYLINE. THIS FAIR IS YET ANOTHER MARKET INDICATOR OF THE SIGNIFICANT ROLE OF ASIA IN OUR INTERNATIONAL ART WORLD. KNOWN AS THE GATEWAY BETWEEN THE EAST AND THE WEST, HONG KONG RANKS AMONG THE WORLD’S MOST DYNAMIC INTERNATIONAL CAPITALS. A 21ST CENTURY METROPOLIS, I HAD THE PLEASURE OF BEING INTRODUCED TO THIS ENERGETIC AND FORWARD LOOKING CITY IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY,  BY A WONDERFUL HONG KONG FRIEND AND CLIENT WHO DIVIDES HIS TIME BETWEEN ASIA AND THE STATES. I WAS IMPRESSED BY THE ENERGY AND INNOVATIVE SPIRIT OF THE CITY. IT HAS, SINCE THAT VISIT SEVERAL YEARS AGO, EXPANDED AS A VIBRANT MELTING POT OF CULTURES AND CREATIVITY.

ART BASEL HONG KONG TRACES TWELVE DECADES OF ART HISTORY FROM EMERGING TALENTS TO MODERN MASTERS OF BOTH ASIA AND THE WEST.  IT PROVIDES GALLERIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD A PLATFORM IN ASIA AS WELL AS AN EXHIBITION VENUE TO VIEW PARTICIPATING GALLERIES FROM ASIA AND ASIA-PACIFIC THAT COMPRISE HALF THE EXHIBITION ROSTER. MANY GALLERIES AS WELL AS CHRISTIE’S AND SOTHEBY’S AUCTION HOUSES HAVE EXPANDED THEIR PRESENCE IN HONG KONG BY OPENING PERMANENT VENUES TO BENEFIT YEAR ROUND FROM THIS CROSS-CULTURAL EXCHANGE AND  PROMINENT COLLECTING MARKET.  LOCATED IN THE CENTER OF THE HONG KONG GALLERY SCENE, THE PEDDER BUILDING, LEHMANN MAUPIN OPENED A UNIQUE SPACE, DESIGNED BY ARCHITECT REM KOOLHAAS, LAST MARCH.

TODAY, THE LRFA BLOG IS VERY PLEASED TO HAVE GALLERY PARTNER, CARLA CAMACHO, PROVIDE HER EXPERT KNOWLEDGE OF THE GALLERY SYSTEM IN GENERAL AND ITS ASIAN PRESENCE IN PARTICULAR. http://www.lehmannmaupin.com/

CARLA, THANK YOU.  HAS YOUR FOCUS AT LEHMANN MAUPIN NEW YORK BEEN PRIMARILY IN SALES OR IS THE GALLERY STRUCTURED SO THAT EACH OF THE DIRECTORS ALSO HAS AN ONGOING WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH SPECIFIC ARTISTS REPRESENTED BY THE GALLERY?

My primary focus is sales and we are departmentalized in organization, however, I have strong relationships with many of the artists and am involved with decisions in many areas of the gallery. I love working with the artists and am always looking at the artists of my generation. I have brought into the program two artists: Angel Otero and one that will be announced very soon!

THE GALLERY REPRESENTS AN INTERNATIONAL ROSTER OF ARTISTS THAT INCLUDES SEVERAL ASIAN ARTISTS. DID THAT ENTER INTO THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESS TO OPEN IN HONG KONG OR WAS THE ENORMOUS SURGE OF INTEREST ON THE PART OF ASIAN COLLECTORS AND PRIVATE MUSEUMS YOUR PRIMARY IMPETUS?

I think at first our decision to be in Hong Kong was made by instinct. It absolutely helps that we have several important Asian artists in our roster, but I think that ultimately we felt that in the global market, Asia was the future.

WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF LEHMANN MAUPIN IN HONG KONG? DO YOU PLAN TO BROADEN THE NETWORK OF CLIENTS AND MUSEUM COLLECTIONS FOR YOUR EXISTING ARTISTS? DO YOU PLAN TO ADD MORE ASIAN ARTISTS TO THE ROSTER, EXCLUSIVELY IN HONG KONG?

The goal is to expose our international roster of artists to an Asian audience. From there we hope to build relationships with collectors and museums on the same level we have done in the Americas and Europe. We may add more Asian artists but intend to have a seamless approach to the exhibition schedule between all three galleries.

I LOVE THE WORK OF THE ARTIST, LEE BUL, WHO LAUNCHED YOUR HONG KONG GALLERY WITH ITS OPENING EXHIBITION. HOW DID YOU SELECT LEE BUL TO INTRODUCE LEHMANN MAUPIN TO THE ASIAN MARKET AND WHAT WAS THE RESPONSE?

The response was overwhelmingly fantastic in terms of attendance and press. The Hong Kong community has been incredibly supportive of our first two exhibitions, and the feedback we have received is that the public is excited to have the opportunity to experience these highly respected artists’ work in person. Lee Bul was a natural choice for our inaugural show for a number of reasons, specifically her presence in Asia is very strong and she has had a number of institutional exhibitions in the region. Her work is often large-scale and site-specific, so having the opportunity to present a new body of work that complimented the jewel-box scale of the gallery was hugely rewarding.

WHAT EXHIBITIONS ARE SCHEDULED FOR THE FORTHCOMING SEASON?

We are opening the fall season with Teresita Fernandez and then we have Do Ho Suh in November. Both are showing new bodies of work which we are excited to present to Hong Kong audiences.

HOW DO YOU AND RACHEL AND DAVID ENVISION THE FUTURE OF LEHMANN MAUPIN HONG KONG?

We envision continued growth and support for our artists across a variety of platforms, including gallery exhibitions, regional art fairs, museum exhibitions and specially commissioned projects. We want our artists to feel supported in real-time and to provide them with a thoroughly connected network of collectors, curators and press from around the world.

THIS DEDICATION TO THEIR INTERESTS AND THEIR WORK CAN SERVE NOT ONLY TO BENEFIT THEM BUT TO SUSTAIN THE LEVEL OF EXPANSION  AND GROWTH THAT MAKES THE  LEHMANN MAUPIN GALLERY SUCH A VITAL ELEMENT IN THE INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY ART WORLD. IN OUR NEXT BLOG, CARLA WILL DISCUSS PRESENT AND FUTURE GALLERY PLANS.

WE WELCOME ALL QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS AND YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE LRFA BLOG.

THANK YOU!
