Carla Camacho, partner at Lehmann Maupin, on gallery exhibitions present and future
LEHMANN MAUPIN, WITH TWO GALLERIES IN NEW YORK AND ONE IN HONG KONG, HAS GIVEN SOME OF CONTEMPORARY ART’S MOST RESPECTED ARTISTS THEIR FIRST SOLO NEW YORK EXHIBITIONS. THANKS TO THE GALLERY’S SUPPORT OF THEIR WORK, ANYA GALLACCIO, KLARA KRISTALOVA, LIU WEI AND JUERGEN TELLER WERE INTRODUCED TO THE AMERICAN ART VIEWING AND COLLECTING PUBLIC. IN ADDITION, THE GALLERY HAS IDENTIFIED THE CREATIVE TALENT OF SUCH ARTISTS AS ANGEL OTERO AND ALEX PARKER AND INTRODUCED THEIR WORK TO THE ART WORLD BY INITIATING SOLO EXHIBITIONS AT THE GALLERY. ALTHOUGH LEHMANN MAUPIN IS CERTAINLY NOT ALONE IN ITS AMBITIONS AND INTENT, IT PROVIDES, IN MY VIEW, A FIRST-RATE EXAMPLE OF THE KIND OF COMMITMENT AN EXCELLENT CONTEMPORARY GALLERY GIVES TO ITS ARTISTS, HERE AND INTERNATIONALLY.
CARLA, THANKS SO MUCH FOR ENRICHING OUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY OF LEHMANN MAUPIN AND BOTH ITS PHYSICAL EXPANSION AND AESTHETIC INFLUENCE. IT WAS FASCINATING TO LEARN THE MOTIVATION BEHIND THE GALLERY’S HONG KONG LAUNCH AND I AM CERTAIN THAT LEHMANN MAUPIN WILL EXPAND ITS STRONG ASIAN AND INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE IN THIS NEW AND VITAL LOCATION.
WHAT EXHIBITIONS ARE SCHEDULED IN HONG KONG?
We opened the fall season with Teresita Fernandez and then we have Do Ho Suh following in November. Both are showing new bodies of work that we are excited to present to the Hong Kong audiences.
I NOTE A GREAT DIVERSITY IN THE NATURE OF THE WORK OF THE ARTISTS THE GALLERY REPRESENTS, WORK ACROSS MANY DISCIPLINES AND MEDIUMS, AND IN MANY CASES, VISIONARY WORK THAT IS LARGE-SCALED INSTALLATION. WHAT PROMPTS THE DECISIONS TO GRAVITATE TO THESE ARTISTS?
The gallery is absolutely committed to showing work that is challenging and thought-provoking. Sometimes it’s not commercial, but you never forget it and that’s what makes it great.
MUCH OF THE WORK IS INTERNATIONALLY BASED AND HAS BEEN DURING THE HISTORY OF THE GALLERY. WHAT ARTISTS HAS THE GALLERY INTRODUCED TO THE NEW YORK AND AMERICAN COLLECTING AND CRITICAL PUBLIC BY THE GALLERY?
Lehmann Maupin has a great track record for finding new talent around the world and exposing them to an American audience. We gave the first shows in New York to Tracey Emin, Anya Gallaccio, Shirazeh Houshiary, Klara Kristalova, Liu Wei, Do Ho Suh, Juergen Teller, and Adriana Varejão.
HOW DO YOU, RACHEL AND DAVID ENVISION THE FUTURE OF LEHMANN MAUPIN HONG KONG?
We envision continued growth and support for our artists across a variety of platforms, including gallery exhibitions, regional art fairs, museum exhibitions and specially commissioned projects. We want our artists to feel supported in real-time and to provide them with a thoroughly connected network of collectors, curators, and press from around the world.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE EXHIBITIONS AND INSTALLATIONS WE CAN ANTICIPATE IN THE NEW YORK SEASON AHEAD?
Unintentionally, we have a bit of quirky and surrealist oriented work coming up. I am very excited about our first 2014 exhibition of new work by Alex Prager, a young artist from Los Angeles that recently joined the gallery and whose photography and films are familiar yet strange at the same time. Currently, we are showing Klara Kristalova and Erwin Wurm, both making figurative sculpture. Kristalova’s harkens mysterious childlike dreams and Wurm’s offers a hilarious approach to formalism.
CARLA, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO THE LRFA BLOG.
IN OUR NEXT POSTING, WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO VIEW ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE OF GALLERY FOCUS AND MANAGEMENT. LORETTA HOWARD IS A SEASONED AND EXPERIENCED DEALER, HAVING WORKED WITH THE INIMITABLE ANDRE EMMERICH INITIALLY. LORETTA HOWARD GALLERY, IN CHELSEA, IS A RESPECTED STRONGHOLD FOR WORKS BY ESTABLISHED MODERN MASTERS WHO GAINED PROMINENCE IN THE 1950s AND 1960s. LORETTA’S KNOWLEDGE AND COMMITMENT TO THE AESTHETICS OF ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM AND COLOR FIELD PAINTING IS PROFOUND AND I LOOK FORWARD TO HER EXPLORATION OF THIS AREA OF THE ART MARKET IN OUR NEXT SERIES.
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR COMMENTS AND CONTINUED SUPPORT!
