THE LRFA BLOG IS DELIGHTED TO HAVE PADDLE8’S SENIOR SPECIALIST, CHARLIE MANZO, DETAIL THE SCALE AND SCOPE OF THE ONLINE AUCTIONS AND ARTWORKS THAT PADDLE8 PROVIDES.
THANK YOU, CHARLIE.
HAVING WORKED AT TWO OF THE MOST POWERFUL, SUCCESSFUL AND INTERNATIONAL GALLERIES, WHAT PROMPTED YOUR DECISION TO JOIN PADDLE8?
I was extremely interested in the online art marketplace and the technology and platform of Paddle8 was the most attractive. While I was very curious about the potential of the online art market, I was still unconvinced of its abilities so I wanted to try it out first hand. Coming from a strong gallery background I want to fuse the principles of traditional galleries with the technology that we experience online.
WHAT ARE THE TWO AUCTION PLATFORMS THAT PADDLE8 OFFERS?
The two auction platforms that Paddle8 offers are benefit auctions and curated / themed auctions. Both are very unique and offer collectors a wide range of artworks to consider.
YOUR THEMED AUCTIONS ARE SO THOUGHTFULLY CURATED. THE CURRENT “ABSTRACT L.A.”, IS AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE – AN AUCTION OF WORKS BY SOME OF LOS ANGELES’ EMERGING AND ESTABLISHED ABSTRACTIONISTS, EXPANDING AND REDEFINING THE PAINTERLY APPROACH TO WORKS ON CANVAS, CLAY AND PHOTOGRAPHY. I THINK THAT BY STUDYING THESE SALES, POTENTIAL COLLECTORS CAN LEARN SO MUCH ABOUT THE AREAS THAT ATTRACT THEIR ATTENTION AND RESONATE WITH THEIR AESTHETIC TASTE.
Bidding in a themed auction allows a collector the opportunity to purchase a piece that is selected by one of our specialists from any number of given sources: artist, private collection, another dealer. We provide the connection between buyer and seller which might have not regularly existed. Benefit auctions provide a very unique opportunity for collectors who wish to have access to terrific works mostly provided directly from artist with proceeds going directly to an organization or foundation.
THE OTHER SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGE THAT PADDLE8 PROVIDES IS TO DO THE ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF WORK OF PUTTING TOGETHER AN AUCTION TO RAISE MONEY FOR A WORTHY CAUSE. IN THE PAST AND STILL TO THIS DAY, NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS ENLIST THE HELP OF THEIR TRUSTEES, BOARD MEMBERS AND VOLUNTEERS TO SOLICIT WORKS FROM ALL OF THEIR SOURCES. PADDLE8 PROVIDES A CONSISTENTLY HIGH LEVEL OF WORK AND HANDLES ALL THE LEGWORK AND PAPERWORK!
Yes, at present, Paddle8 is holding a benefit auction for The Glass House. This auction supports the National Trust Historic Site located in New Canaan, CT, a landmark modernist house built between 1949 and 1995 by architect Phillip Johnson. The Glass House Summer Party takes place on June 14. Supported by Swarovski, the event features a festive picnic, music, lawn games and a chance to experience “Fujiko Nakaya: Veil” and an exhibition of Al Taylor’s work along with the entire Glass House campus – a pastoral 49-acre property comprised not only of the residence, The Glass House, but 14 additional structures conceived and built by Philip Johnson.
PADDLE8 HAS PARTNERED WITH MORE THAN 150 NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS WORLDWIDE. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF THESE PARTNERSHIPS AND WHAT ARE SOME OF THE NON-PROFIT PARTNERS? HOW DID PADDLE8 DECIDE TO TAP THIS MARKET – AT AUCTION HOUSES THERE IS THE OCCASIONAL BENEFIT AUCTION BUT I WOULD HARDLY CALL THAT THE HEART OF THEIR BUSINESS.
We partner with fantastic organizations that truly make a difference, RxArt, Lunchbox, ArtWalk. It’s really amazing and gratifying to be involved in and see wonderful works of art trade hands at the benefit of these organizations. Not only do collectors get to take home unique works from famous, extremely sought after artists they are also greatly contributing to helping others. Paddle8 designed a platform that makes it very easy to display and market these artworks to a much larger collector base. Typically the organizations would rely on their own one night annual event to sell the works, by using Paddle8 collectors have the opportunity to bid on works for two weeks leading up to the live event.
HOW DOES PADDLE8 FIND PROPERTY FOR THE THEMED AUCTIONS? WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF THEMED AUCTIONS THAT PADDLE8 HAS HELD SINCE ITS OPENING?
For themed auctions Paddle8 specialists finds property through various sources such as from artist directly, collectors who wish to sell property and various dealers who own and have access to good material. One of past and most successful themed auction sales we had was the single owner sale called “Insider”. It was a terrific collection of contemporary works by young cutting-edge artists. The sale really spoke well to our core Paddle8 brand and therefore was very successful.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THEMED AUCTIONS THAT ARE SLATED FOR THE YEAR AHEAD?
Since the number of themed sales is increasing every year, it gives us the opportunity to explore new ideas and test our market base as well as presenting sales that suit our core brand. We are working on another single owner sale similar to “Insider”, we’re also going to do a hyper emerging contemporary artist sale, we also hope to present partnerships with outside curators from the fashion and art world where we present works of their own selection and or collection.
IN OUR NEXT POST, CHARLIE WILL SHARE HIS ASTUTE PERSPECTIVE ON THE FUTURE OF ONLINE ART AUCTIONS. I APPRECIATE YOUR COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS AND ENCOURAGE THEM!
