Nick Korniloff of Art Miami on the art of the fair
ART FAIRS HAVE PROLIFERATED INTERNATIONALLY ACROSS THE UNITED STATES, EUROPE AND ASIA IN THE LAST DECADE. MANY GALLERIES THAT HAD CONCENTRATED THEIR EFFORTS SOLELY ON ARRANGING EXHIBITIONS FOR THEIR ARTISTS IN THEIR GALLERY AND WITH CORRESPONDING GALLERIES WHO SHOWED AT THE OCCASIONAL FAIR NOW HAVE A DOUBLE EXHIBITION SCHEDULE TO MAINTAIN VIRTUALLY YEAR ROUND. THE INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR HAS BECOME A HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT MEANS OF ARTIST EXPOSURE AND SALES IN OUR GLOBAL MARKET. AN ENORMOUS NUMBER OF COLLECTORS AND MUSEUM CURATORS ATTEND WORLDWIDE AND PRIMARILY ADD TO THEIR COLLECTIONS ONLY DURING THESE SHORT BURSTS OF ACTIVITY. KEEPING ABREAST OF THE CURRENT CONTEMPORARY MARKET IS MORE THAN A FULL-TIME JOB. THE BEST ART FAIRS ATTRACT THE BEST EXHIBITORS AND PROVIDE A CONCENTRATED VENUE IN WHICH TO SEE A WIDE DIVERSITY OF BOTH MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART.
ART MIAMI IS KNOWN AS MIAMI’S PREMIER ANCHOR FAIR AND, DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF DECEMBER, OPENS ART WEEK. IT MAINTAINS A PRE-EMINENT POSITION IN AMERICA’S CONTEMPORARY FAIR MARKET, WITH GALLERIES EXHIBITING A WIDE RANGE OF WORKS IN A VARIETY OF MEDIUMS. http://www.artmiamifair.com/

WELCOME, NICK. THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO CONTRIBUTE. WHAT IS YOUR OWN PROFESSIONAL HISTORY IN THE ARTS?
I started in the art exhibition business from the ground up. In the early ‘90s, after receiving a degree in Hospitality Management from Florida International University, I was hired as an events manager by Spectator Management Group (SMG) at the Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC). The first show I ever worked on – my first day on the job – was Art Miami. Within a year, I became the Facility Manager of the MBCC, where I was in charge of the operations staff at the facility. The MBCC was home to Art Miami every January up until 2007, when it moved to the month of December and the City of Miami.
After leaving the MBCC, I went to work for International Speedway Corporation and was the manager of corporate partnerships. In the summer of 2001, my phone rang and it was the former owners of Art Miami – they had just sold their Palm Beach Fairs to a British Media Company by the name of the DMG World Media. They needed someone to run the operations of the business and I interviewed for the position. I traveled the world and became very familiar with the top blue chip dealers in the Fine Art, Modern and Contemporary markets. I worked closely with the original director of Art Basel, Lorenzo Rudolf, and together we built the business to be the most successful Fine Art and Antique Fair in America. We also ran a contemporary art fair called Art Palm Beach. When Lorenzo left, I continued on for three more years in the capacity of director of each fair and the Vice President of the business. My extensive training with art came from the ground up.
