THE EXHIBITORS REPRESENT A DIVERSE AND INTERESTING MIX OF PERIODS AND STYLES RANGING FROM EMERGING AND MID-CAREER ARTISTS TO SECONDARY MARKET MODERNIST AND POST-WAR MASTERS. IN AN INTERVIEW IN LAST WEEKEND’S FINANCIAL TIMES, NICK KORNILOFF, FOUNDER AND PARTNER OF ART MIAMI, LLC, WAS QUOTED ON THE LAUNCH OF ART MIAMI NEW YORK AND THE HISTORY OF THIS NY-BASED FAIR.
Meanwhile, the Downtown modern and contemporary art fair launched its first edition last May at New York’s 69th Regiment Armory on Lexington Avenue. Its roster was top-heavy with high-end dealers keen to access the important market hub that is New York. “That was a test fair, but we soon realised there was no room to grow,” says Nick Korniloff, a director and partner of Art Miami LLC, which runs the stalwart fair Art Miami. So Downtown is no more and has been replaced by Art Miami New York, taking place on Pier 94 (May 14-17)… a Mecca for secondary-market material.
LAST DECEMBER, ART MIAMI CELEBRATED ITS 25th ANNIVERSARY LAUNCHING MIAMI ART WEEK AND CLOSING WITH RECORD-BREAKING SALES AND ATTENDANCE THAT FAR EXCEEDED ITS 2013 FIGURES. MORE THAN 82,500 COLLECTORS, CURATORS AND DEALERS VISITED ART MIAMI AND ITS ADJACENT SISTER FAIR, CONTEXT AND MORE THAN 14,000 PATRONS ATTENDED THE VIP PREVIEW. THESE IMPRESSIVE NUMBERS NOT ONLY DOCUMENT THE ART WORLD’S PHENOMENAL PRESENCE AND PARTICIPATION IN MIAMI ART WEEK IN GENERAL BUT ALSO THE ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS AND POPULARITY OF ART MIAMI, LLC, IN PARTICULAR.
IN TODAY’S LRFA BLOG, FOUNDER AND PARTNER, NICK KORNILOFF WILL TRACK THE HISTORY AND EXPANSION OF ART MIAMI, LLC. SINCE ITS INCEPTION 25 YEARS AGO. THANK YOU, NICK!
HOW WOULD YOU CHARACTERIZE ART MIAMI IN THE CONTEXT OF ART WEEK IN MIAMI, ART BASEL MIAMI, AND THE SATELLITE FAIRS THAT ABOUND IN EARLY DECEMBER: RED DOT, AQUA, PULSE, TO NAME JUST A FEW?
Art Miami is the kick off to Art Week in Miami. The VIP preview happens every Tuesday and has become the “can’t miss” social and cultural event of the week. Art Miami is the hometown fair, and celebrated its 25th edition this year. It is the anchor fair to all the satellite fairs that take place on the beach and in the City of Miami. It has a longstanding tradition of showing the most diverse and important works from the 20th and 21st centuries by well-respected art dealers. Many of our participating dealers have participated in Art Basel, Basel Basel, TEFAF, the ADAA Show and the Armory Modern & Contemporary Show in NYC. All participants have a very strong fair pedigree and know how to work with the most seasoned collectors, as well as educate and cultivate new collectors into the market.
THE SPECIAL EVENTS THAT ART MIAMI ORGANIZES ARE EXTREMELY WELL-ATTENDED. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS?
The fair featured 28 new exhibitors this year, which was certainly be a draw for guests. A highlight was the VIP Opening Night on December 2, 2014 which welcomed VIP collectors and accredited members of the press to experience an exclusive first view of the highly anticipated galleries and artworks with a cocktail reception benefiting the Pérez Art Museum Miami. At Art Miami’s sister fair, CONTEXT, the 1AN Symposium brought together opinion leaders and industry experts to speak on a range of topics covering everything from valuation, security, shipping, storage, restoration, authenticity and more. Private tours and a children’s art center will also be featured.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO CONCENTRATE ON DEVELOPING ART FAIRS AS THE FOCAL POINT OF YOUR BUSINESS ENDEAVORS IN THE ART WORLD?
We have a client base of international exhibitors that want representation by a first class fair organizer. We provide and fulfill that need. They have confidence in us, and understand we are advocates of the gallery system. However, art fairs have become just as important for their business plan and how they represent their artists. The art market has gone global and we provide the opportunity for our network of dealers to make new important relationships in each of the markets that we host fairs.
WHEN WAS ART MIAMI LLC FORMED AND WHEN DID YOU BEGIN TO DEVELOP FAIRS IN ADDITION TO THE ORIGINAL ART MIAMI? WHAT WAS THE COMPANY’S MOTIVATION IN DOING SO AND HOW DO YOU SEE ITS EXPANSION IN THE FUTURE?
Art Miami LLC was formed in summer 2009. In the late fall of 2011, we decided we could launch another fair in Miami during Presidents Day weekend called Art Wynwood. Art Wynwood takes place during the busiest holiday weekend in South Florida and mixes the street art movement with mainstream contemporary and modern works of art. It really is reflective of the Wynwood Arts District. During Art Wynwood, we decided to launch a fair named Art Southampton Long Island for the end of July 2012. This fair became an immediate success, as the market was underserviced for investment quality works of art. We essentially created a fair that matched the identity and lifestyle of those vacationing and living in the Hamptons.
It was in-between Art Wynwood and Art Southampton that we conceived the idea of CONTEXT to run side-by-side with Art Miami and feature emergent and mid-career cutting edge galleries and artists only. This presented a diverse group of international galleries, artists that participated, and a whole new group of collectors, curators, art professionals and enthusiasts who visited the fair.
Prior to the Miami fairs in December of 2012, we decided that we wanted to have a position on the beach, but more importantly, have a fair that was small-scale and catered to young, emergent talent. We closed on the acquisition of the Aqua Art Miami fair that fall, and ran our first edition in 2013. This provided our network of Miami shows with additional collector connectivity.
In April 2013, we announced the launch of our Art Silicon Valley/San Francisco fair for Oct 9-12, 2014 and in late 2013, we decided to acquire the Downtown Fair in New York City, which runs at the 25th and Lexington Armory during Mother’s Day weekend in May.
EACH FAIR HAS A DISTINCT CHARACTER AND CATERS TO A SPECIFIC GEOGRAPHICAL AND COLLECTOR DYNAMIC. IN OUR NEXT LRFA BLOG, NICK WILL SHARE HIS FORMULA FOR SUCCESS IN SUCH A HIGHLY COMPETITIVE ASPECT OF THE CONTEMPORARY ART MARKET.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED READERSHIP AND SUPPORT.
